It is the time of year for heating costs to begin to sky rocket. Whether you have natural gas, propane and propane accessories, fuel oil, or whatever other heating resource, you heating costs are about to rise. While the cost of heating is down this winter compared to years past, it is still expensive. I am going to talk a bit about lower your heating costs by negotiating your natural gas contract with a new supplier.
If you are in an area where you can switch natural gas suppliers, call around and see if someone is offering a bettor rate than you already have. Some may offer teaser rates for whatever mcf’s for a few months, which can save you huge this winter. Be aware their are early termination fees if you cancel and go with another company within a year or so.
While you may not save a ton of money you can combine this with other money saving things to do this winter. Below is a list of things to help you save money on heating,
1. Turn down thermostat ( very obvious) and grab some blankets
2. Get a programmable thermostat or learn how to use the one you got
3. If you are wearing shorts in your house when it is 3 degrees out then just do not bother reading the rest, you do not want to save money.
4. Check for drafts and huge cracks in the doors. Use some weatherstripping and seal them.
5. Get furnace tuned up and change the filter.
6. Do not turn on your electric stove for heat. If you do this, hopefully you cannot read this post, since that money should be paying your gas bill.
7. Get a wood burning stove. Yeah I know then you will have to buy wood. Well, deal with it.
8. Get another job to make more money so you do not have to turn heat down. Why do you think I am writing this stupid post?
